Leaders of the YSR Congress, TDP Seemandhra and Telangana Congress, including Ministers and MPs, met President Pranab Mukherjee at the Raj Bhavan on Monday and submitted memoranda, opposing and supporting bifurcation of the State.
While the YSR Congress, led by its president Jaganmohan Reddy, urged the President to stall the process of bifurcation, Telangana Congress leaders wanted him to expedite the same.
In his representation, Mr. Jagan contended that the Union Government’s decision on bifurcation was without any basis and based purely on political considerations and was therefore unconstitutional.
Later talking to reporters, YSRC leader M.V. Mysura Reddy said that they had brought to Mr. Mukherjee’s notice that the Justice Sarkaria and Justice Punchhi Commissions had clearly stated that there should be a basis like a report of a commission or a State Assembly resolution as a must for creation a new State. He said that none of these conventions or practices was being followed in the present case.
Telugu Desam Seeamandhra leaders appealed to the President to ensure equitable justice to people of both the regions while taking any decision on bifurcation. If this was not possible, State should be kept united. While coming out, P.Keshav and Nannapaneni Rajkumari raised ‘Save Andhra Pradesh’ slogans. They said that bifurcation should be done only on the basis of Assembly resolution.
