The Centre to hold a crucial Telangana meet on Friday where home secretary R.K. Singh will meet secretaries of five key ministries and representatives of the Planning Commission during which he would ask them to prepare detailed status reports for the division of assets and liabilities between the two states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The developmental needs of backward regions, particularly in Seemandhra, will be discussed.
Hyderabad: Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan had a series of meetings in Delhi on Wednesday with the key Congress leaders involved in the state’s bifurcation. There is no official word yet on what transpired at the meetings.
However, it is believed that the Governor, who will play a key ro-le as the constitutional head of the state, got to hear how to proceed further on the issue. It is also believed that he briefed those present on the political situation in the state and his perception of issues concerning the bifurcation.
Narasimhan separately met Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Union ministers P. Chidambaram and Sushilkumar Shinde, AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh and President Pranab Mukherjee. He also had an exclusive meeting with some officials in the home ministry who are involved in the bifurcation process.
Meanwhile, Seemandhra legislators and ministers are leaving for Delhi on Thursday to meet the President, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, in the afternoon to request him to honour the conventions that were followed by the NDA government when carving out three states in 2000.
The delegation consists of about 40 leaders, led by minister Dr S. Sailajanath. They want the President to insist on seeking an Assembly Resolution before referring the Telangana Bill to the Assembly for expressing its opinion.
They are also likely to meet the Group of Ministers constituted to handle matters pertaining to the formation of the new state of Telangana. However, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has not given them an appointment.
