Hyderabad: Police lobbed teargas shells to disperse students in the Osmania University Campus when they turned violent while trying to take out a rally to the L. B. Stadium where the “Save Andhra Pradesh” meeting of the APNGOs was scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon.
Once again the Osmania University Campus, which has been the hot bed of students agitation for a separate Telangana state, turned into a war zone with the police making heavy security arrangements to thwart the students plan to prevent the meeting of the integrationists in the L B Stadium.
Heavy contingents of the police including central and para-military forces were deployed at the two main gates of the campus besides erecting heavy barricades. The Students JAC has already declared that they would prevent the APNGOs meeting defying the prohibitory orders. Since morning the students tried to take out a rally and march towards the stadium but the police foiled their attempts.
The students and the police were constantly engaged in a scuffle with the students trying to remove the barricades and the police trying to check the students from coming out of the campus. The infuriated students even indulged in repeated stone pelting, but the police observed restraint and blocked the road at the NCC gate to check the students from moving out.
After repeatedly failing to take out a rally, the students assembled at the Arts College building in large numbers and took out a rally in their final bid to proceed to the stadium. When they were prevented at the NCC Gate, the students turned violent and began raining stones on the police. The police tried to chase the students by resorting to a lathi charge, but when the stoning increased and situation was becoming serious, tear gas shells were lobbed to disperse the students.
Three students sustained injuries in the lathi-charge, while some police personnel also sustained injuries in the stoning by the students.
