Some wept with joy, some silently prayed and a few were a picture of dejection as pilgrims for Haj-2014 were selected through ‘qurrah’ (draw of lots) here on Thursday. But there was no murmur of protest as the whole process was carried out in a transparent way.
The computerised draw was done by the Haj Committee of India at Mumbai and the online process was displayed on screens at the Haj House here. In all, 3,904 pilgrims were selected through draw of lots. This is in addition to the 1,476 pilgrims who were already chosen in the two reserved categories – the 70 plus and the fourth time applicants.
With 1,787 pilgrims, Hyderabad tops the list of number of pilgrims who will be performing Haj this year. The city is followed by Kurnool (377), Guntur and Ranga Reddy (288 each), Anantapur (246). The least number of four pilgrims are from Srikakulam district.
The selected pilgrims will have to pay the initial amount of Rs. 80,000. There will be some change in the airfare. The exact charges based on the Riyal rate would be intimated shortly, Mr. Jaleel said.
