The special task force headed by security advisor in the Union home ministry K Vijay Kumar on Thursday completed its task of eliciting opinions from serving and retired IPS officers on how they visualise the law and order situation after bifurcation of the state and what could be done to strengthen it further.
Vijay Kumar, after holding talks with chief secretary PK Mohanty at the state secretariat earlier in the day, said the brief given to him was to explore ways to beef up and strengthen institutions and make policing more effective.
“We have taken the opinion of a number of officials. We have studied how the overall law and order situation would be like. We will submit a report to the ministry in the next three to four days,” Vijay Kumar said after his talks with Mohanty. The report would be crucial since the GoM on state bifurcation is expected to meet on November 7 to take the Telangana process forward.
According to sources, the special task force had heard the views of officers on possible resurgence of Maoism in Telangana as had happened in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand states after their formation and also possible law and order problems in Hyderabad and whether the Centre should take control of it after bifurcation of the state.
The Centre has expressed concern over the safety of the people of Seemandhra region who have settled in Hyderabad and even hinted at bringing in special legislations to protect them, notwithstanding protests from Telangana leaders that they would take enough care of security of the people of Seemandhra origin.
According to Vijay Kumar, the committee also studied coastal security. Andhra Pradesh has nearly 1,000 km of coastline and its security is of paramount importance as terrorists might sneak into the state using the sea route.
“We have taken a overall view of security setup,” Vijay Kumar said, and paid compliments to the police force in AP for being very effective in dealing with any problem. “Andhra Pradesh has a good tradition of policing,” he said.
