Rallies, walks and runs mark the World Diabetes Day

Collector C. Sudharsan Reddy led the diabetes run here in connection with the World Diabetic Day on Thursday. Medical and nursing students, staff and general public participated in the event. The rally which started at the medical college reached the Kondareddy Fort where the run culminated into a meeting at the Police Grounds.
Principal of medical college G.S. Ramprasad, Superintendent Umamaheswar, Professor of Gastroenterology Sankara Sarma, Professor of Endocrinology P. Srinivasulu, ZP CEO Suryaprakash and others walked along with students.
Mr. Sudarsan Reddy called upon doctors to counsel patients as well as general public about the harsh effects of diabetes on society, individuals and families.
He said the myth that the rural areas were free from diabetes was exploded as the rural areas too were equally affected. ZP CEO Suryaprakash said that he turned into a diabetic in 2004. Dr. Srinivasulu who coordinated the run said India had a diabetic population of 61 million against the world diabetic population of 347 million. It is expected to reach 101 million in India by 2030. For every diabetic patient, four persons were in the pre-diabetic state indicating that the problem was going to aggravate in future. The sad part of it was that the people as young as 20 were falling victim to the disease in the recent years to due drastic change in the life-style.
Dr Umamaheswar said it was easy to treat a patient but difficult to prevent the disease, which health professionals should take it as a challenge. Dr. G.S. Ramprasad said one should not spend more than two hours before television set and also undertake one hour physical exercise every day to prevent onset of diabetes.
Nellore Staff Reporter adds: Awareness programmes were conducted by various hospitals and institutions on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. B.V.S. Ravisankar of Ravi Diabetes Research Centre threw light on the reasons for spread of diabetes at a programme held here in the morning.
They distributed pamphlets containing information about the symptoms and lifestyle modifications needed for diabetes patients.
At a camp held the Smile Dental Hospital at Rameshreddynagar, G. Kiran said that the patients suffering from diabetes run a high risk of getting dental ailments. Kadapa Special Correspondent adds: Nearly 1,000 para-medical, MBA and B. Ed. students participated in the “walk for future” from Kadapa Diabetes Centre near old bus stand to Koti Reddy circle carrying a 500-metre-long blue flag and formed a human chain in the programme organised by diabetician Varanasi Pratap Reddy.


Doctors Pratap Reddy, G. Ramgopal and Rajasekhar told newsmen that parents should take proper care of the health of children and guide their food habits. Diabetes was spreading among children too and parents should consult doctors if their children complained of weakness and mental stress. The walk was organised to spread awareness among the people on diabetes and its prevention, the doctors said. Diabetes can be checked or avoided if people were engaged in physical activity and overcame mental stress, they said. Balaji Institute of IT and Management chairman L. Nitish Reddy, Rajeswari College of Higher Education principal Narasimha Raju and Vaishnavi degree college principal Sudarshan Reddy and students of the colleges participated.
