There has been an overall 30 per cent rise in the cost of running hospitals in the last five years due to changes in taxation policies and increases in water and power tariffs. Hospitals also need to ensure their position in the certified and accreditation list, which increases the costs.
The rising cost of medical equipment due to the fluctuating dollar and pound rates, has made it difficult to procure the best equipment and pay for its annual maintenance. Hospitals claim that these rising costs are not matched by the charges to patients.
The chief executive officer of Apollo Hospitals, Dr Hari Prasad said, “If this scenario continues for long, we will have no option but to pass it on to the patients.
The medical facilities in Hyderabad are the best and they attract people from other parts of the country and also from abroad but the price of treatment is very less compared to other metros. There is a need to re-look into the whole issue and affect the right and measured change so that the hospitals are not overburdened.”
