Visakhapatnam plunges into darkness

Visakhapatnam: The indefinite work strike by 50,000 plus EPDCL staff, both regular and contract, from Monday demanding withdrawal of Telangana note, has pushed people in all the three districts of north Andhra – Vizag, Viziangaram and Srikakulam — into total darkness.
There is no power in households, shops, offices, small industrial units. However, some commercial establishments, cinema halls and large-scale industries are managing with alternative arrangements like diesel generators. There are no street lights due to lack of power supply.
Most of the electrical feeders at the switch stations have been shut due to technical snag. Not even a single staff member is away from strike to repair the feeders and resume power supply.
The power for the city is supplied through switch stations at Gajuwaka, dairy farm area, Parawada and Pendurthy, besides two more stations. A few switching stations at Vizag also supply power to Viziangaram and other surrounding areas.
“We don’t even have a lineman to switch on power at the sub-station and repair the feeders. No alternative arrangements can be made as we don’t have sufficient staff,” said a senior officer of EPDCL.
The discom is receiving 1215 mw of power against the demand of 1,500-1,700 mw. Around 250 engineering and non-engineering staff at Sileru hydel power generation unit also launched strike affecting power generation.
Due to the absence of power supply, drinking water supply is also likely to be affected to those areas coming under GVMC limits from Tuesday.
