Anantapur/Kadapa/Kurnool: At least 20 tanks  and bunds breached in Kadapa district on Thursday submerging thousands of acres in the floodwaters following low pressure in the Bay of Ben-gal.
Revenue officials had cut bund of  Nagasanipalli tank to avoid submerging of Nagasanipalli village in Khajipeta mandal and diverted flood water to the down stream.
Tank was overflowing since Wednesday following incessant rains from the upstream and started submerging the village. Sensing the dangerous situation, the authorities cut the bund on Wednesday.
Breaches occured for Sagileru reservoir in Atlur mandal due to heavy inflows from the upstream areas of Mydukur. The breach had submerged more than 5,000 acres of paddy, groundnut and other commercial crops down stream villages of Sagileru and Varaarajulapalli in the district.
Authorities opened five gates of the project releasing water towards the tanks in the down stream. It may be noted the project was built with Rs 11 crore during the YSR regime and got filled in overnight following heavy rainfall.
Official sources said, an average of 10 cms of rainfall was reported in Kadapa district filling most of the tanks and other structures.
Colonies in low-lying areas in  Kadapa were still in flood waters as there was no relief from incessant rains. CPM urban secretary N. Ravisankar blamed the Congress and TD leaders and contractors for not concentrating on low-lying areas while taking up huge development works.
“Improper maintenance of drainage system was prime reason for submerging many colonies during rainy season at district head quarters,” he lamented. Collector K. Sasidhar inspected the flood-hit villages in the districts and directed the authorities to speed up rescue and relief measures.
In Kurnool, heavy rains lashed at many parts of the district including Srisailam and Nandyal. A tractor with 20 passengers got stuck in the Bhavanasi river canal between Atmakur and Kothapalli mandals. Nearby people rescued passengers using ropes.

An average of 8 cm rainfall reported in Nandyal division, sources said. Velugodu reservoir was filled due to incessant rains from upstream. Srisailam temple premises were overflowing with rainy water on roads.
In Anantapur, revenue officials evacuated entire Pilligundlapalli in Talupula mandal suspecting submerging of village due to adjacent Handri Neeva main canal. Sources said, the villagers were shifted to avoid untoward incidents. About 100 houses were collapsed in three districts.
