Only parliament can make or mar a new state

New Delhi: AICC spokesperson Sandeep Dixit has said that the process of carving out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh is on and going by the Constitutional procedures, Chief Ministers of states cannot stop the process.

The Constitution has vested the power of forming new states in the Parliament. If the Parliament Okays bifurcation, it will happen. If the Parliament is not agreeable to bifurcation, it will not.”

His remarks assume significance in view of the comments attributed to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, who has said that he will stop the “bifurcation cyclone” though he was not able to stop the Phailin cyclone.

Sandeep Dixit made it clear that the current Telangana process is going forward on the basis of a cabinet decision and that the GOM appointed for the purpose, has started work on the same. The Bill will take shape based on the report to be given by this group, he said.

When scribes asked about the resignations of MPs and the agitations in Seemandhra region, Dixit said: “We are aware that there are widely different opinions on the issue. Congress has taken a decision after deliberating the issue for two years.”
