Even as people protest in the Andhra and Rayalaseema regions over the Union cabinet’s decision to carve out a separate state of Telangana by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh, yet another demand is being made for formation of a Greater Rayalaseema state.
Kuncham Venkata Subba Reddy from Proddatur in Kadapa district,  who  floated a political outfit called the Rayalaseema Rashtra Samithi (RRS), said in a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee that the present state of Andhra Pradesh should be trifurcated and a Greater Rayalaseema state be formed along with Telangana.
Vehemently opposing the proposal to divide Rayalaseema and merge one part consisting of Anantapur and Kurnool districts with Telangana to form ‘Rayala Telangana’, Kuncham says in the letter that to address the problems of Rayalaseema region, a Greater Rayalaseema state comprising of Kadapa, Kurnool, Chittoor, Anantapur, Nellore, Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh; Vellore and Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu, and Raichur, Kolar and Bellary districts in the neighbouring Karnataka state should be formed.
He said the Srikrishna Committee that had studied and taken the opinion of various sections of the society from all regions reported that Rayalaseema was the most backward region of Andhra Pradesh.
“The region, which is bereft of assured irrigation water, also lags behind in education, industrialisation, power projects, etc,” he said and suggests that either Kadapa or Kurnool be made the capital of the proposed state of Greater Rayalaseema.
He describes that creating Greater Rayalaseema is the panacea for the problems prevalent in the Rayalaseema region, one of the backward regions in the country.
