Lapse: A videograb of CCTV camera footage of Jyothi Uday being attacked by a man at a Corporation Bank ATM in Bangalore on Tuesday. Many ATMs are left unguarded as banks depend on CCTV cameras as well as cameras in ATMs to deter criminals.
A 38-year-old woman was attacked by an armed assailant inside an ATM kiosk at LIC building near Corporation Circle here on Tuesday.
The victim, Jyothi Uday, manager in the service branch of Corporation Bank on Mission Road, entered the Corporation Bank’s ATM kiosk around 7.10 a.m. on her way to office.
Seconds later, the assailant entered the kiosk and drew the shutters behind him, pulled out what appeared to be a pistol and a machete and threatened her.
The police said that the assailant warned her of dire consequences if she did not withdraw a large sum of money from the ATM and give it to him.
When she tried to evade him, he struck her with the machete, on the head and nose, and she collapsed.
The CCTV footage obtained by the police shows the assailant grabbing valuables from her bag before leaving.
The attack went unnoticed for almost three hours until passersby observed blood stains near the downed shutters and alerted the police.
The S.J. Park police rushed to the spot and shifted the woman to Victoria Hospital from where she was taken to NIMHANS. She is now recovering at BGS Global Hospital.
The police said that there was no security guard posted outside the ATM when the attack took place.
