Jabbar Travels, whose Hyderabad-bound Volvo bus was involved in a tragic fire accident on October 30, was yet again in the dock for flouting safety rules. On Saturday, the Regional Transport Office seized one of their buses for carrying excess commercial goods.
A Chennai-Bengaluru service (KA 01/AB -532) of Jabbar Travels was seized and impounded at the Electronic City RTO.
Ever since the accident in Mahabubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh which claimed 45 lives, the state transport department has been carrying out a drive against erring transport operators.
“It is a crusade against all such illegal activities by travel agencies. We are not targeting any one travel agency, but it is against all. We have been carrying out the drive across the city since October 31,” said K. Amaranarayana, commissioner for Transport and Road Safety.
The Volvo bus tragedy has forced several departments to ensure improvement of safety standards in buses. The incident had raised several questions regarding safety of bus passengers.
The Volvo bus, operated by Jabbar Travels, met with an accident when it hit a culvert and caught fire. Following the incident Shakeel Jabbar, the owner of Jabbar Travels, was arrested but he was granted bail after completing court formalities. However, the bus driver Feroze is still in jail as he was unable to provide surety.
Since October 31, the Karnataka transport department has been conducting intense drive against safety violations in all transport vehicles, including tourist, state carriage and contract carriage vehicles. Ever since this drive began, in Bengaluru itself a total of 11,000 cases have been filed till November 9.
The travel operators have been booked for defects in emergency exits, route violations, permit violations, carrying excess commercial loads and other violations. A total of 115 vehicles across the city have been seized.
“Excess commercial luggage on transport vehicles poses a hazard and could cause accidents. The Jabbar Travels vehicle was seized for this violation,” said R.V. D'Souza, Joint Commissioner (Transport-Enforcement).
The transport department has deployed 10 special squads to carry out checks in Bengaluru.
