Violence rocked the region after desperate Samaikyandhra activists initiated extreme steps against acceptance of the Telangana-note at the Union cabinet meeting without considering the agitation going on for 66 days.
The situation went out of control in many places after the activists attacked Congress party offices, Central government offices and railway stations as part of the 48-hour bandh called by Joint Action Committee, 72-hour bandh by the YSR Congress and the one-day bandh by Telugu Desam. All roads including small streets were filled with activists setting fire to old tyres disrupting traffic.
They did not allow even autorickshaws in Anantapur district. Activists attacked the Congress party office at Rayadurg and set the furniture on fire protesting against the unilateral decision of the Centre.
A large number of agitators set fire to railway tracks filling it with cement blocks at the Ramachandra Nagar railway gate and Ramnagar in Anantapur. Thousands of protestors blockaded the railway track for more than two hours and stopped the Vijayawada-Yeswanthpur passenger train.
Tension rose when the activists pelted stones on the police. The police dispersed the mobs and cleared the railway line.Later, another group of activists damaged the Railway Level Crossing gate at Ramnagar in Anantapur. The activists pelted stones at the Congress party office.
YSRC and TD activists pelted stones at each other near the Sapthagiri Circle when YSRC activists blocked a Telugu Desam rally. Both of them shouted slogans against each other and pelted stones.
A large number of policemen rushed to the spot and dispersed the mobs. Later, the Telugu Desam Party staged a rasta roko at Ramnagar protesting against the stone pelting.
Activists damaged 20 autorickshaws at Hindupur as part of the bandh. Samikyandhra protesters stopped the Sampark Kranthi Express and Chennai Expresses at Tadipatri and Dharmavaram.
Activists pelted stones at the police during the rail roko at Dharmavaram. Samaikyandhra protesters damaged all road dividers between the Clock Tower and Congress office in Anantapur.
Additional forces have been deployed at all sensitive parts in the district to prevent untoward incidents, Superintendent of Police S. Syamasundar said to media persons.
