Rayalaseema Parirakshana Samithi president Byreddy Rajasekhar Reddy has called upon the leaders and people to grab the opportunity to restore the glory of Kurnool city by locating the capital. Addressing a meeting at Weaker Sections Colony here on Friday as part of his campaign from the bus, he said the leaders of yester years committed a blunder by allowing the capital to be shifted to Hyderabad in 1956.
Since the State would revert to 1953 status, it was the ripe time for the people to demand the capital in the city. He said the people of Rayalaseema should not equate themselves with those of Coastal Andhra as farm labourers from Kurnool and Anantapur districts were migrating to other areas failing to earn Rs. 100 a day. This condition did not exist in Coastal Andhra which was attracting the labour from other areas.
Mr. Reddy said the division of the State was anticipated a year ago considering the mood of the Congress party high command. The Congress party wanted to divide Andhra Pradesh for political gains, but it refused to create Rayalaseema State.
He said the Rayalaseema region was at the crossroads and the leaders needed to provide direction to people. Even though the region contributed six Chief Ministers, poverty, illiteracy, hunger, deprivation and lack of drinking water still existed in the region. He said Coastal Andhra leadership was playing a safe game by changing the tactics every day suiting their needs. If the people of Rayalaseema depended on their direction, they would be in for disappointment later. Even the leadership at New Delhi agreed to the view that it was natural that the capital for new State should be located at Kurnool. In the event of failure to grant capital status to Kurnool, the people should explore other ways.
He is expected to address people at over 40 places in Kurnool city on Friday and Saturday.
