AP: In all likelihood, the duration of power cuts that have been imposed in the APTransco Krishna circle, will be increased in the coming days.
According to official sources, the residents of the city are likely to face an additional one to two hours of power cuts while those of the district will have to suffer an additional three hours of power cut.
At present, the officials have been forced to impose power cuts of two hours in the city, six hours in the villages and mandal headquarters and four hours in the municipalities across the district. In addition, officials are also imposing an hour-long unscheduled power cut for villages and mandal headquarters.
The thermal power plants in the state, including the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station, are not producing power to their full capacity due to shortage of coal.
This has resulted in the gap between power supply and demand increasing day by day. The Krishna district requires about 11.2 million units of power every day, while Vijayawada city needs about three million units. However, the district is receiving only about nine million units and the city 2.5 million units.
“If the shortage of power continues, the schedule of power cuts may be revised and increased,” said Krishna circle Transco superintending engineer Krishna Mohan.
At present, the VTPS is producing only 1,350 MW against its full capacity to produce 1,760 MW as it is facing a shortage of coal since the last week.
The VTPS needs about 10 racks of coal per day but is receiving only eight racks at present. The supply from Thalcheru of Odisha and Indonesia was stopped due to the recent cyclone Phailin.
VTPS CE J. Sammaiah hoped that the supply is restored within a week. “Lack of quality coal is the main problem in power generation,” he said.
